Our Film so far...The Feedback

When our film opening was presented to the class, we were presented with both positive and negative feedback, I will now discuss the feedback we received. I will start with the positive comments. Over all our footage was told to be of a high standard, and people particularly had a preference for the use of the GO PRO footage which showed Point of View(POV)shots of both characters. The music for our opening was also liked and we were told it fit our opening well.

However as much as there was good points there were also bad points, or places we could improve our piece to make it that just a bit better. The title screen fonts were apparently not fitting for an action film and do need to be changed, and to also be matching too.
The fade into white at the end of the final POV shot was suggested to be black, which we agree with as it was our original idea to be black instead of white. Also the notion of our film having a '2 days earlier' kind of title at the end of our film has been taken on board an applied to our film to further the feeling of enigma.

We found the in class feedback to be very useful and insightful for further developing our film, and we hope our end product is of a high quality.

Job Roles

Producer:
A Producer is a key role within the filming industry. A Producer will overlook the hole operation, from the first idea to the completion of the film. They work very closely with the Director and the staff on set. Me, Harry Weatherall and George Lewis are producers for our film opening.

Director:
The Director is very important job role with the making of a film. The Directors overseas and is in charge of, make up artists, camera men, editors... Pretty much everyone on set. For our film opening I shall be the Director because I am organised and have a good understanding of what we want the end product to look like.

Camera:
The camera man is also a very important job role, because without a camera man nothing would be filmed and therefore no film. The camera men for our film opening are Me and George Lewis.

Sound:
A sound engineer is a person who is in-charge of the sound on set, they make the sound be absolutely perfect so that when it comes to editing it is a lot easier to do. Our sound Engineer is Harry Weatheral.

Actors:
The actors are the characters that are played in the film. An actor is the person but outside of the film context, so not the character within the film. Our actors are Harry Weatherall and Josh Shardlow. Harry is one of our actors because he's good at acting and has a wide range of knowledge in action films and understands what to do when and where. Josh is our other actor because he did GCSE Drama and is very good at acting.

Editor:
An editor is someone who puts all the fotage filmed on set and puts it togther and helps put the sounds in the right place. He/she does this by adding and taking footage out, cuting and shortaning footage. Our editor is George Lewis because he demonstrates good editing skills and proved himself to be so in the priliminary task we did.

Film ideas,Group pitch

In our pitch we discussed two of our film ideas of an action film genre. The first film idea we had is named Persuit and the second is Abducted. Our primary target demographic is males under 35 and our second is males over 35.

Some of students after the pitch gave us some ideas of what they thought would look good in our film opening. One of the ideas was to have an arial or birds eye view shot. Which is quite a hard type of camera shot but however we believe it can be done. And hopefully we will be able to fit that into our film opening. The students also helped us decide whic of the two ideas sounds better. However they didn't say idea one or idea two they said they thought a mix of the two ideas would be really good. One student said that having a gun shot and having to create a fake wound would be really hard and a low budget it wouldn't be successful and therefore it would bring our grade down. And make the film opening look rubbish. Therefore we will not have this in our film opening. Mr Benzie also said that he would much rather not having a soldier being persuid but rather a normal average day man. He also said that this would create more enigma.

In conclusion we have decided to take in account all the ideas the students/teacher have thrown at us. And we have decided to try and have a arial or birds eye view shot. Not to have the gun shot wound and to not have the soldier. And finally to combine both ideas together.

Film Opening Ideas

1st Film Opening Idea

Soldier running through the woods persuade by two armed men. One of the villains falls behind and other continues pursuit, whilst trying to shoot the soldier and shoots his hip. When he releases he is out of bullets he drops his weapon to the ground. The soldier is wounded therefore he isn’t able to run as fast, the villain catches up with him tackles him down to the ground and punches him one with his right in the face and second time camera falls to the ground like of a point of view shot still hearing the punches in the background and blood trickling on the forest floor.

The first camera shot we shall take will be of the soldier running past the camera and then pan to the left tracking the soldier. Then keeping that position we will have the two villains run past after him. We will then go into a tracking shot if possible of the villains and the soldier. Then a shot just on the villains when one of the gives up the chase then one of the soldier still running. Then going back to the villain with a point of view shot showing the back of the villain and the solider, the villain who is still continuing the pursuit and tries to shoot the soldier and hits his leg so a long shot of the soldier being shot and wounded at the hip. Then back to the villain who goes to grab another cartridge but realises he has none left. So a mid shot of him dropping the gun. With a match on action of soldier limping and the villain catching up on him. Then a long shot wear the soldier gets talked by the villain. We then have a point of view shot from the soldiers perspective showing the villain punching him. Then the camera falls on its side show the blood from the soldier.

2nd Film Opening Idea

The setting is in a wood in the middle of day, the weather is dry and over cast/fairly dull. A panning shot moves across the woods and switches to a long shot of another part of the wood, giving the impression of emptiness and isolation. Then the sound of footsteps becomes present and a man runs past a the camera, a jump cut moves to a shot from behind the man as he is running away from the camera. A gunshot is heard in the distance whilst a shot of the man running towards the camera is used. A collection of shots show him running until he stops to catch his breath and take in his surroundings. A close shot of his face shows his distressed emotions and sense of panic as he looks behind and sees his pursuer, briefly the man stares as the guy runs after him. The pursuit is then back on when the first runner is tackled to the ground and there is a fit as the last scene reveals the chaser.

Target Audience Member profile

For the target demographic member, I have chosen my cousin Nick Gartrell. He used to be a sales manager but now is a full time dad. He is in the middle class category C1, Nick is of the appropriate age of 34 and male gender who is married and has child. When I interviewed him on Facebook I asked him questions about what films genres he likes and which films. What music he likes, brands and what does he like to do in his spare time. I also asked him what he likes to see in an action film and what he doesn't like to see. I am using this information to get an idea of what my perfect demographic person likes and wants.

Films and Genres: When I asked Nick what type of film genres does he like his first choice was action. I then proceeded to ask him what action films does he like, he said Skyfall. The Expendables 2,The Bourne Identity and Inception. He said he also likes Thriller and Comedy. These two genres here a rather un-important for our research.

Action films: Seen that Nick seems to favourite Action films I wanted to know what does he like to see in an action and what doesn't he like to see. Nick said " What I think makes an Action film good is the actors, without the key well known actors an action film will never be good." Some of his favourite actors are: Bruce Willis, Silvester Stalonne, Matt Damon and Daniel Craig. "The reason for the actors being key is because they have a personality that is defined and is one with the character". Nick also talks about what he likes to see in an action film: explosions, fighting that gets you on your toes, small amounts of dark humour, death and car chases.

Music: Nick likes Adele which goes hand in hand with the Film Skyfall that has the song from Adele Skyfall in it. He said that the song from Adele is the best theme tune for the film Skyfall because of the deep meaning and character behind the lyrics. I asked Nick what sort of sound track does he like to hear in an action film. He likes a sound track that sets the theme and the ambiance of the film. I then asked can you give on specific sound track that would best describe this and he said the sound track to The Expendables 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFXQrgdg2t8). This sound track is very up beet, with fast moving action that gives a sense of danger. It sets the mood of the film and brings to the film more action feel to it.

As the interview took it's course i discovered that in Nick's spare time he likes to watch TV, go shopping and surf the Internet. This is very good information for me because it means I can have an idea of where I will advertise my production. The advertisement of my production is the key to unlock success or failure. If the advertisement is bad then my production will fail and I shall loose lot's of customers. From what Nick has said I know that I need to advertise on the Internet, in shopping mauls and on the TV. I also found out that Nick likes the brands: Samsung, Sony, Apple, Quicksilver... by knowing what sort of brands Nick likes I can deduct that definitely Samsung and Sony are possible companies that I could have a deal with that in their stores that on every TV they sell that on the up-coming month to the release of the film that they show my trailer. This is another form advertising meaning more people are likely to watch and know about the film.

Target Audience interview

The first person we interviewed was in our chosen target audience demographic, males under 35. Our chosen interviewee was Mr Higgins, a teacher at our school, we also had a student (Andrew) who also represented this audience. As expected both people chosen to represent our chosen target audience shared similar view on action films, and what they both like in their favourite action film. A few of the things that our primary audience favoured were themes such as, a typical 'Good Guy' and 'Bad Guy' and Bruce Willis as their favourite action actor.

In our first interview with Mr Higgins he told us that he liked action films for the fast paced action, explosions and that his favourite action film was Die Hard, this being a film that meets most typical conventions of an action film. After listening to Mr Higgins' comments we have decided to include actions, and some violence in our film opening. By doing this we hope to further appeal towards our target audience demographic. We learnt from both Andrew and Mr Higgins that too much romance & bad story writing in the film lead to disaster and a poor film, and so we hope to avoid both of these things.

After we interviewed the people in our Primary target audience, we looked at our secondary demographic which was males over the age of 35. The two people we interviewed for this were again teachers, Mr Cutts and Mr Johnson. Firstly we interviewed Mr Cutts who also was a fan of action films but preferred different things to those in our Primary demographic. Mr Cutts told us how he usually expects the Villain in an action film to be either English or Eastern European such as 'Hans' from Die Hard who was East German.

In contrast to our primary audience though he preferred a small amount of violence used in an action film and felt it un-needed. In response to this comment we will not feature too much 'over the top' violence, but perhaps enough to still keep our primary audience interested during the film openning. Another contrast between our two demographic groups centered around romance. Our primary audience felt it to be a downfall of some action films and un-needed. Where as when we interviewed Mr Johnson who was another teacher over the age of 35, he felt romance to be a good aspect of an action film, an example he gave us was the James Bond film 'Her Majersty's secret Service'.

In our film openning we will not feature any romance or romantic themes as we feel this would spoil any action sequences, and put off our primary audience. Our secondary demographic would not find this a problem as romance is not seen as their favourite theme in an action film.

Box Ofiice-Action film

Box Office
I looked at websites like box office mojo, the numbers and imdb to collect data on my chosen genre. In doing so I hope to improve my knowledge on what audiences like about action films.

This data sheet from a box office shows us how much of the Market is owned by Action films. We will be mainly focusing on 2013 because it is the most relevant time period. Currently in 2013 24.46% of the Market  is owned by the Action film genre. That is almost 1/4 of the Market. This result shows us that the genre Action is very popular within all the different genre of films.
Currently Action is in 4th position in the table of Top Grossing Genres from 1995 to 2012 because Action's 4/14 this shows that it is very popular and a successful film genre. The total gross that Action genres have made over the years is $32,066,637,809. This is rather a large amount of money, however it isn't the most amount of money a film genre has made because Comedy is at the top with $44,792,158,044.

This here is a list of the Top-Grossing Movies since 1995-2013. This shows us the total gross theses films are marking. Some of the more recent films like the Dark Knight Rises made $448,139,099 and Iron man 3 made $408,992,272. These results show us that there is a big market out there for Action Films.

This is The Expendables 2 movie , it is one of my favourite action films and this is why I have chosen to talk about it. It is a classic action movie staring all the top    The Expendables 2 was released in Cinemas world wide on the 17th of August 2012, that same day the total gross added up to $10,494,145. By the time the film was released on Dvd on the 20th of November 2012 the total gross was up to $85,028,192. The movie has made so far $312,573,423. The reason why The Expendable 2 is such a good selling and popular film is because it contains lot's of action and very popular actors like: Sylevster Stallone, Chuck Norris and Bruce Willis. Also because there was The Expendables as the first one this was also very successful, this will the encourage people to watch the new film " The Expendables 2".

G.I. Joe Retaliation is a very typical and successful action film. The opening weekend of this film in total it made $40,501,814. In total the film has now made $ 375,740,705. The reason this film has made such a large amount of money is because it is a classic action film. It has explosion, fast action, guns and fighting, a bit of humour and it has the good guys and the bad guys. In this film there are the two types of good good guys and bad guys. The good guys there are the big strong men with guns and then there are the sort of super hero's who are the good guys who are wearing mask and costumes. And this is the same for the bad guys. In every action films you want to see a sexy female who is a bit violent and with a strong character. In this film there are two females which means that this film will be more appealing to men. In my opinion this film is very successful, well made and very typical of an action film.

UK Film Council Audience Research

In the group we looked at secondary research, that had been collected by the UK Film Council. We are looking for our key demographic data. The genre we are looking for is Action.

From this data sheet we can deduct that the most typically enjoyed film genre is Comedy coming in at 64%.
Action however is a little lower down with a 50% ranking. However this is still quite a high percentage.

From this data sheet we can conclude that Action films are generally watched by over 35 year old males and who are middle class.

From this data collection sheet we have the general publics view on what they're favorite film genre is. We can see that 20% of the populations favourite film genre is Action.

This data sheet tells us what sort of people favourities Action films. In this case for Action it is under 35 year old males who are parents and are lower class.

The Target Audience we are wanting to aim for are under 35 males, who are parents and lower to middle class. Our secondary Target Audience would be over 35 males, it isn't important if they are married or not and who are middle class.

Brief

The titles and opening of a new fiction film to last a maximum of two minutes.
